- W198847560 abstract "The legend of how Stephen Crane, Joseph Conrad, Ford Madox Ford, and others, revered Henry James and called him master is well known. James, after the failure of Guy Domville in 1895, began to be regarded as a writer's writer, and his later fiction seems directed more to esthetic ends than to the demands of entertainment. His influence on succeeding writers, though accepted almost as a commonplace of literary history, has rarely been discussed in detail.1 This neglect is unfor? tunate because James's unique approach to fiction opened particular paths of development for the novel. One of the new directions for fiction can be seen in the complex texture and kaleidoscopic structure of The Good Soldier. Ford's novel owes much of its milieu, its idea of character, and its structure to something which might properly be termed the Jamesian legacy. The so-called objective tradition in the modern novel is exem? plified by The Good Soldier, which, unlike its Victorian predecessors, was written without the artificial security of omniscience; instead, readers were actively forced to struggle with an evolving truth. Following an epistemological scheme2?that is, a situation in which the awareness of reality is the key element?a pattern first demonstrated by James's The Sacred Fount but realized as early as What Maisie Knew,1 Ford creates one of the landmarks of modern fiction. I propose to focus on The Good Soldier from the Jamesian perspective, to establish how James's experi? ments after 1895 affected Ford." @default.
