- W1988638570 abstract "Abstract The majority of the cultivable bacteria present in dental plaque possess the potential to form iodine-staining polysaccharide. Streptococci, diphtheroids, fusobacteria and Bacteroides produced abundant amounts of polysaccharide, whereas Veillonella , anaerobic streptococci, Vibro sputorum and lactobacilli formed little to none. Cultures of each of three hamster streptococci known to be non-cariogenic consisted of mixtures of strong and non-polysaccharide producing types. Sub-cultures of each polysaccharide type continued to give rise to mixtures of strong and non-polysaccharide producing cells. Five of six cariogenic rodent streptococci uniformly and consistently formed abundant amounts of polysaccharide and no polysaccharide negative variants were observed. Variation of polysaccharide production was found to occur in vivo by non-cariogenic streptococci, but not by cariogenic streptococci. Sixty per cent of the cultivable bacteria from human carious lesions were found to be strong polysaccharide producers, while only 13% of those from caries-inactive plaque were strong producers. After prolonged incubation only 6 of 95 streptococcal strains derived from carious debris gave rise to negative variants, whereas 40 of 44 strains from caries-inactive plaque formed negative variants." @default.
