- W1988660165 abstract "Ventriculomegaly (VM) is a sensitive marker of fetal central nervous system development. Several studies have attempted to detect prognostic factors associated to VM for adequate antenatal counselling. The potential influence of gender on ventricular size is controversial. There seems to be a male predominance among fetuses with mild VM, associated with a better prognosis. However, previous studies have analyzed only ventricular atrial width in a short gestational period. The aim of this study was to evaluate throughout gestation various ventricular measurements using 3D multiplanar imaging, and verify if there is a gender difference in fetal ventricular size. A total of 101 normal fetuses between 19 and 30 weeks were studied prospectively in two referral centers. Of these, 56 were male and 45 were female. They were divided into three groups according to gestational age: 19-22, 24-26 and 28-30 weeks gestation. A 3D ultrasound volume of the fetal brain was acquired from a transventricular axial or a midline sagittal plane. The following right and left ventricular measurements were performed off-line by an expert sonologist using the rendered multiplanar images, blinded to fetal gender: the classical atrial width (axial plane), the anterior horn width (coronal plane), the ventricular height and the thalamo-occipital distance (TOD) (parasagittal plane). All of them are frequently used in neonates. Statistical comparisons were performed using unpaired Student's t-test. No differences were detected in ventricular size in relation to fetal gender in any of three gestational intervals studied, except for a greater TOD in male fetuses at 24-26 weeks gestation (p < 0.04). Our preliminary results suggest that male and female fetuses have similar ventricular measurements throughout gestation, at different ventricular locations." @default.
