- W1988724984 abstract "The aim of this paper is to consider the nature of emotion in mentally retarded people. Following definition of mental retardation, and more problematically, of emotion, attention is given to previous research. Other than a small handful of studies within the tradition of empirical psychology, there is a paucity of literature. Emotion in mentally retarded people has been assumed to be no more than emotional disturbance and this has been equated with psychiatric disorder. Consideration of recent research and theory in emotion strongly suggests that there are two approaches which are particularly applicable to the study of mental retardation. The behavioural tradition, especially that which is concerned with conditional emotional responding, offers a number of possibilities for the study of emotion in retarded people. Also relevant in this context are recent investigations of emotional expression and recognition. However, even more pertinent in leading to a series of promising research questions, are recent investigations of emotional development in non handicapped human infants. This has been conducted in a framework of naturalistic observation, primarily of mother-infant interaction, and has used techniques which would readily transpose to the study of emotion in mentally retarded people." @default.
