- W198879543 abstract "The developments in the sector of nuclear graphite are discussed with regard to its five properties: purity, behavior to radiation, density in mass and structure, waterproofness, and compatibility. On the basis of some test results it is shown how much the neutron absorption cross section of artificial graphite depends on impurities of boron, nitrogen, and special sands and that according to some cross sections pure carbon should have sigma /sub a/ for thermal neutrons of 3.5 mbarn. Graphite behavior under neutron radiation is discussed on the basis of the obtained results and of those taken from ltterature. There is a distinction between the damages due to radiation conditions only, such as dosage and temperatures, but which are not connected with a particular graphite grade, and others which are related to graphite grade. On the basis of these results it ls posslble for the reactor operator to choose the grade of graphite more qualified for a special purpose. Besides the usual grade of nuclear graphite with block density of about 1.7 g/cm/sup 3/, pieces of graphite with block density up to 2.21 g/cm/sup 3/ have been prepared. The grades of graphite and their size limits are discussed in detail. The developmentmore » in waterproof graphites by the filling of pores with pure carbon has been reached with a block density of 1.95 g/cm/sup 3/ and a permeability of 10/sup -6/ cm/sup 2/ sec/sup -1/ . The fa ct that non-absorbent graphite all the same can soak a certain quantity of liquid is put in evidence. The possibilities of graphite basic reactions towards other elements are reported. The behavior of graphite towards sodium and oxygen and carbon dioxide which is important for the operator of the reactor is discussed in detail. Some examples concerning different modes of application of nuclear graphite are given. (auth)« less" @default.
