- W1988798975 abstract "1. Studies of vasopressin stimulated sodium and water transport across toad bladder (Bufo marinus) have shown that maximum sodium transport may be stimulated by 2·2 mU/ml vasopressin and maximum water transport by 22 mU/ml vasopressin. 2. Vasopressin (2·2 mU/ml) gives rise to an increased oxygen consumption in toad bladder that isinsensitive to addition of theophylline (10−3 M), whereas vasopressin (100 mU/ml) causes a further increase in respiration that is entirely theophylline sensitive. 3. A dose response relationship, having a double sigmoid form, has been obtained for oxytocin stimulated respiration in frog skin. Stimulated respiration at lower doses of oxytocin was found to be insensitive to the presence of theophylline but at higher concentrations of hormone the further increase in oxygen consumption was entirely theophylline sensitive. 4. In the presence of vasopressin (22 mU/ml) the activation energy for water transport across toad bladder was reduced from 8·9 kcal/mole to 4·8 kcal/mole. Cyclic AMP (10−3 M) plus theophylline (10−3 M) increase water transport at 22°C by an amount similar to that produced by vasopressin (22 mU/ml) there was no similar decrease in the permeability activation energy." @default.
