- W1988808213 abstract "Observations have been made on the dimple formed between an air bubble and a glass plate horizontally immersed in water or an aqueous KC1 solution by means of a traveling microscope. Interference rings have been observed to contract gradually and disappear at the center. The radius of the first dark ring, r, has been measured with time, t, and the rate equation, r3 = r3 — kt, holds for both water and dilute KCI solutions, where r0 is the radius at t = 0 and constant k may be regarded as the rate constant of the thinning of the dimple. The relation of k to temperature, T, has been found to be approximated by k = Aexp(−Ea/RT). The activation energy of the thinning of the dimple, Ea, is not affected by the addition of KCI but is equal to that of the viscous flow of water. Constant A decreases with an increase in the concentration of KCI. On the other hand, the force acting between the surfaces of the glass and the bubble per unit area has been calculated according to the theory of heterocoagulation. When the distance between the surfaces is equal to the thickness of the liquid film at the first dark ring, the resultant attractive force is parallel to constant A against KCI concentration up to 10−1 mole m−3." @default.
