- W1988983721 abstract "Abstract The effects of past feeding conditions upon the antiserum induced transformation pattern of serotype D, stock 47, variety 4, Paramecium aurelia, were investigated. Remote past history was found to affect the direction of initial transformation. After prolonged growth under conditions of limited food, animals respond to antiserum exposure by transforming to serotype B. After prolonged growth under conditions of excess food, they respond to the same exposure by transforming to serotype J. The inertia of the response to environmental change is not readily explained; it is suggested that this may mean that shifts in basic transforming potentiality can occur only at autogamy. The immediate past history of animals which tend to transform to B was found to affect the frequency of this primary transformation and also the relative frequency with which the derived B undergo secondary transformation to serotype D or serotype A. The frequency of primary transformation and the frequency of transformation to A increase with starvation. The fact that there is an unstable B intermediate in the transformation of D to A, together with the fact that antiserum may depress rather than increase the transformation of certain unstable serotypes (e.g. serotype J), suggest that inhibitor removal may not be the important means by which antiserum induces transformations. It is proposed instead that transformation may be due to the generalized physiological shock accompanying immobilization by antiserum." @default.
