- W1989011036 abstract "Nematodes and bacteria are two important interacting members of the soil biota. Of the several possible ecological interactions that occur between nematodes and bacteria, only two, amensalism and parasitism, are considered in depth here. Amensalism, bacterial antibiosis towards nematodes, happens in soil largely as the result of the stepwise bacterial degradation of plant and animal residues. These residual products released into soils range from simple to complex molecules. Several products accumulate locally in soils to concentrations that are toxic, antibiotic or inhibitory to plant nematodes. The second interaction, parasitism, emphasizes the bacterium, Pasteuria penetrans, and its interaction with the root-knot nematodes, major crop pests. Descriptions are given of the life stages of the bacterium that include its attachment to nematode larvae, penetration, vegetative growth, endosporogenesis and final release into soil. The ability of P. penetrans to prevent reproduction and eventually kill these root-knot nematodes offers the real possibility of biological control for these major plant pests." @default.
