- W1989480210 abstract "Abstract Two experiments investigated the immediate comprehension of and later memory for descriptions of objects standing in various relations to one another. In the first experiment, continuity of reference, kind of relational term (spatial vs nonspatial), and whether the description supported transitive inferences all affected the ease with which subjects were able to answer simple questions immediately following each description. Furthermore those descriptions that were easy to understand initially, and that presumably required less initial processing, were remembered less well later than those that were difficult to understand. In the second experiment, in which subjects could control the amount of time they spent reading the descriptions, a different pattern of results emerged. The sentence by sentence reading times reflected the difficulty of integrating the information in the current sentence with what had gone before. The subjects compensated for the difficulty of referentially discontinuous passages by spending longer reading them. However, they were not able to compensate for the difficulty of either nonspatial as opposed to spatial relations, or transitive as opposed to nontransitive descriptions, presumably because these factors affect not the initial integration of information, but how difficult the passages are to represent in memory." @default.
