- W1989614819 abstract "Abstract A series of 15 patients with grade II and grade III gonarthrosis and varus deformity were treated with a closing wedge high tibial osteotomy without internal fixation. The surgical technique is simple, effective and does not involve internal fixation. An alignment rod produces a normal biomechanical axis allowing an easy and accurate intraoperative correction of the varus deformity while eliminating the need for pre-operative radiological measurement. The medial transfer of the laterally removed wedge minimizes limb shortening. Release of the deep part of the medial collateral ligament and removal of medial osteophytes is essential, helping to open up the medial collateral ligament. An inexpensive, lightweight and custom-designed angular knee brace is used post-operatively to maintain the alignment correction and to correct residual deformities. This easily constructed brace allows early knee motion without loss of correction. Combining the operative techniques with use of the angular knee brace in the post-operative period is an excellent option for correction of deformities in underdeveloped countries where internal fixation may not be viable because of limited medical resources." @default.
