- W1989849423 abstract "The sol-gel process has been used for the preparation of cerium-doped silica gels. Successful processing of composition containing less than 6 mol% of Ce results in transparent, amorphous, monolithic samples. Crystallization occurs during heat treatment, the crystalline phase being ceria (CeO2). Density data suggest that Ce is included in the network rather than deposited at the gel surface. However, a composition gradient exists, the surface layer being depleted in cerium. The UV cutoff was found dependent upon the cerium concentration as well as the heat treatment of the samples. The higher the cerium content and the temperature, the higher the cutoff. Transparent samples were tested for the Faraday effect. About 0.75 mol% of Ce is enough to counterbalance the effect of the silica matrix. Samples having a Verdet constant between −3 and 4 could be prepared." @default.
