- W1989952800 abstract "Since Mikhail S. Gorbachev came to power two years ago, there has been a steady series of pronouncements, actions, and gestures which in their diversity and range have startled many people in the West. Observers are by turns puzzled, skeptical, or hopeful about what is actually taking place in that vast and bewildering land called the Soviet Union. K.S. Karol, a writer and editor for Le Nouvel Observateur, is uniquely qualified to assess these developments. Born in Poland in 1924, Karol, after the partitioning of his native land in 1939, spent seven years in the Soviet Union, studying political science at the University of Rostov and fighting in the Red Army on the Caucasian front. Karol left Russia after the Second World War and has since lived in Paris. He returned to the Soviet Union for extended visits in 1984 and 1985. He is the author of numerous books, including Khrushchev and the West, China: The Other Communism, and Guerrillas in Power: The Course of the Cuban Revolution. His most recent book, a memoir, is Between Two Worlds: The Life of a Young Pole in Russia, 1939-46 (New York: A New Republic Book/ Henry Holt and Co., 1987). He was interviewed in New York City by Steve Wasserman, editor of New Republic books. This article can also be found at the Monthly Review website, where most recent articles are published in full.Click here to purchase a PDF version of this article at the Monthly Review website." @default.
