- W1990116210 abstract "Several quantitative and structural parameters (species composition and abundance, biomass, diversity, concentration of liposoluble photosynthetic pigments) have been measured during the colonization of five intertidal communities in northwestern Spain. Three phases of structural recolonization were recognized by means of the application of the index of diversity in overlap between contiguous successional structures: 1) colonization phase (C.P.) 2) channelling succession phase (Ulvacean phase) (C.S.P.), and 3) normal structured communities (N.S.C.). Quantitative data present great fluctuations depending on the month when the experiments started. The main conclusions may be drawn from an area cleared in October. Number of species and biomass increase during the succession; diversity presents peaks in the overlap between phases, decreasing when dominants are more abundant, chlorophyll a did not exceed 300 mg m−2 in the earlier communities, giving values of 1200 mg m−2 in more advanced states. Chlorophyll a per unit biomass decreases from earlier to later stages, as does the ratio of production to biomass.
