Endogenous opioid peptides (OP) are an important and well-known family of hormonal, neurotransmitter and leucocyte-derived peptides, as shown by the wide distribution of their receptors and secretion areas. They are involved in down-regulation mechanisms in the cognitive stress-stimulated hypothalamo-hypophyso-adrenocortical and sympathetic axis and in the overall inflammatory response of non-cognitive stressors. According to our current knowledge, their central role in stress regulation brings the OP up to main physiopathologic actors in acutely ill patients housed in intensive care. This is consistent with the mortality predictive value of serum OP measured on admission." @default.
