- W1990214375 abstract "Low-temperature phase transitions of the high-pressure low-temperature silicate lawsonite, CaAl2(Si2O7)(OH)2·H2O, were discovered by Libowitzky & Armbruster (1995) using single-crystal X-ray diffraction and optical microscopy. The space group symmetry is changed in two steps from Cmcm (>273 K) via Pmcn (<273 K) to P 21 cn (<155 K) as a consequence of different H2O and OH arrangements in the cavities of an almost unchanged framework that consists of chains of edge-sharing AlO6 octahedra interconnected by di-silicate groups. The phase transitions were interpreted using polarized IR spectroscopy of oriented single-crystal sections as dynamic order-disorder transitions, involving hopping motions of H2O and OH groups at ambient temperature, freezing in at low temperatures, thus leading to an enhanced hydrogen bond system (Libowitzky & Rossman, 1996). Later studies, using a number of different techniques confirmed the phase transitions, and revealed their tricritical ( Cmcm to Pmcn ) and second-order ( Pmcn to P 21 cn ) character, as well as an additional displacive component in the framework of the lawsonite structure ( e.g. , Sondergeld et al. , 2000a and b; Carpenter et al. , 2003; McKnight et al. , 2007, and references therein).A recent paper of Kolesov et al. (2008) presents single-crystal neutron diffraction and Raman spectroscopic data from 20 and 4 K, respectively, to ambient temperature to further examine the H positions and the hydrogen bond system during the phase transitions. These experimental data are in excellent agreement with the previous single-crystal X-ray diffraction and IR spectroscopic results (Libowitzky & Armbruster, 1995; Libowitzky & Rossman, 1996). The interpretation of the Raman data, however, contradicts a number of observations, which will be elucidated in the present comment. At ambient temperature, the crystal structure of lawsonite appears to …" @default.
