- W1990340899 abstract "Experiments were carried out of the nutritional rôles of alanine, cystine, glycine, serine, and tyrosine, which had previously been shown to be non-essential in the silkworm, Bombyx mori L. Single additions of alanine, glycine, and serine to the basal diet containing essential amino acids alone, or essential acids plus aspartate, improved larval growth and development. The effect increased by increasing dietary levels of these non-essential acids, but less was required in the presence of aspartate than in its absence. Cystine possessed a marked sparing effect for methionine, and tyrosine for phenylalanine, when the dietary methionine or phenylalanine was insufficient. In the absence of methionine or phenylalanine no growth improvement was observed by the addition of cystine or tyrosine, but cystine and tyrosine still possessed a slight growth-promoting effect in the presence of sufficient methionine and phenylalanine." @default.
