- W1990446937 abstract "During twelve years (1960-71) 31 cases of mongolism were identified among some 25,000 live births to residents of Framingham, Massachusetts. Since Jan. 1, 1967, newborn infants who were suspected of having an anomalous cytogenetic constitution of any kind have been photographed, X-rayed, and karyotyped. From the 10,493 babies born alive from 1967 to 1971, 17 cases of mongolism have been confirmed, 8 of them in babies born in 1971. During these five years, relevant details of maternal health at conception were analysed by three age-groups. Whereas older women contributed disproportionately to the totals, there was a risk of mongolism in each age-group. The hypothesis is advanced that trisomies, monosomies, and aneuploidies corresponding to the types which can be induced in hamsters can occur from natural causes in man. Suspected causes of mongolism in man are significant delays in fertilisation of the oocyte consequent on many factors in older women, including erratic endocrine functioning, infections, and menstrual irregularities. Probably of major importance also are chance postponements of critical matings due to ignorance of the endocrine timetable, and also to crude attempts to use temperature charts, either to conceive or to reach the contraceptive security of the safe period." @default.
