- W1990465359 abstract "PURPOSE: The aim of this research is to investigate the physical activity and motor performance of 277 school children, 8–9 years, living in indigenous, rural and urban communities in the State of Parana, Brazil. METHODS: This is a cross-sectional study. Data from each child included anthropometry (weight and height), types of physical activities (daily activities, play and games) assessed by questionnaire, amount of physical activities measured by accelerometer and motor performance measured through standing long jump, shuttle run, sitting and reaching and sit up tests. The statistical procedures included frequencies and percentages, ANOVA and MANOVA, controlling for age, weight and height. RESULTS: The children from the urban and rural zones have larger height and weight than those from the indigenous area. The types of physical activities were similar for the three groups, such as mini-cars, catch and variation, ball games and dolls. The frequencies for climbing trees, swimming in the river and housework/land activities related (cleaning, cooking, carrying woods for the fire, take care of animals) were higher in the indigenous children group. Boys performed better than girls on the motor tests. When the motor tests were controlled by age, weight and height showed non-significant differences among the three groups for the shuttle run and standing broad jump. The indigenous children, in both sexes, had statically higher results in the reaching and sit test when compared with the other groups. The rural and urban boys had higher results in the sit up test when compared with the indigenous boys. The accelerometer showed that the amount of physical activity was statically similar to the three groups, although the indigenous children had the tendency to be more active. CONCLUSIONS: The differences observed among children from the three contrasting zones probably reflect factors associated with lifestyle." @default.
