- W1990485924 abstract "Recent research has suggested that visual-search functions will become shallower with practice, but only if the stimuli and responses are consistently mapped. We tested the necessity of consistent mapping for the phenomenon by asking subjects to report the largest digit in a visual display. Despite the fact that we used a varied-mapping task, significant reduction in the visual search function was observed. The reduction could not be attributed to the probability information in the task. Perfectly consistent mapping of stimulus to response does not appear to be a necessary precondition for reduction of visual-search rate. Psychologists and educators, as well as succinct adages, have extolled the benefits of practice. Recently, cognitive psychologists have attempted to investigate the consequences of practice on human mental functioning. Practice, under certain conditions, can produce substantial changes in performance: In addition to general improvements with practice, performance in the practiced task is often unaffected by the number of nontarget items. Practice alone, however, does not appear to be sufficient. Researchers (e.g., Kristofferson, 1972; Ross, 1970; Schneider & Shiffrin, 1977) have proposed and demonstrated that the mapping between the stimulus or stimulus set and the responses must be consistent. If a stimulus is consistently mapped to a particular response, then the presence of that stimulus will in" @default.
