- W1990537759 abstract "It is significant to note that while there have been various studies written by Israeli scholars' on the response of Arab intellectuals to the defeat of the Arab states in their struggle against Israel and their explanation of this defeat, not a single analytical work has been made in this regard by an Arab.2 The purpose of this essay is not to fulfil this need. Its objective is to draw attention to the increasing body of literature written by Arab intellectuals on al-nakba,3 to examine the various trends and directions that emerge from these writings and to relate them to the development of modern Arabic thought. Let us start by defining the terms and the scope of this endeavor. nakba, a word originally used by Dr Costi Zureiq in 1948, refers in its broadest meaning to the total confrontation that has been developing since the early decades of this century between Zionism and the Arab countries in general and the Palestinian people in particular. This confrontation manifested itself in dramatic military form in the events of 1948, 1956 and 1967, the first leading to the fall of the Palestinian community and its transformation into refugees and the last resulting in a new exodus of Palestinians, and the military occupation of what was left of Palestine, i.e., the West Bank and Gaza, as well as parts of the Egyptian and Syrian territory. This confrontation is labelled total in that it is comprehensive: it embraces economic, social, political, national, military and technological spheres of life.
