- W1990811306 abstract "It has been demonstrated that concentrated suspensions of L5178Y tissue-culture cells take up free cholesterol (either from serum or emulsions) by a non-enzymic adsorption process which is temperature and concentration dependent. These cells also adsorb dihydrocholesterol and cholestenone but not progesterone or testosterone. The adsorbed cholesterol cannot be removed from viable cells by repeated washings with either serum or solutions of emulsifiers. The free cholesterol in the L5178Y cells whether adsorbed or a product of synthesis de now does not exchange with exogenous cholesterol. Heat inactivation of the cells results in a 30% reduction in cholesterol uptake. Extraction of the cells with lipid solvents reduces uptake between approx. 10 and 80% depending upon the particular solvent used." @default.
