- W1990824363 abstract "Currently, the majority of states in the U.S. do not have laws on insurance coverage for infertility, and there are no state or federal mandates that specifically address fertility preservation. With improvements in prognoses and chances for parenthood, there has been a movement for insurance coverage of IVF for cancer patients and it is important to consider public opinion in the development of these policies. To assess the attitudes of the general U.S. population toward insurance coverage of IVF for cancer patients. An online questionnaire was distributed to adult male and female U.S. residents ages 18-85 years. Statistical analyses included unadjusted and multivariate logistic regression models adjusting for age, gender, income, religion and nulliparity. Tests for linear trend were calculated for age, education and household income. P<0.05 was deemed statistically significant. SAS version 9.1 was used for all analyses. 1183 eligible respondents were included in the analyses. The mean age of participants was 44.7 ± 16.2 years. Distribution across age group, gender, geographic location, education, household income, race and religion were consistent with national statistics. 966 of 1183 respondents supported IVF for cancer patients with infertility and of these, 699 (72.4%) agreed with insurance coverage. Participants who were unemployed and in “fair or poor” health had significantly higher odds of agreeing with insurance coverage. Male gender (OR 0.70, 95% CI 0.52-0.94) and higher household income were associated with decreased support (P=0.004). Nearly all of the supporters of IVF for infertility (922, 95.4%) also agreed with the use of IVF for embryo cryopreservation in a young woman with newly diagnosed cancer. 697 (75.6%) felt that fertility preservation should be covered by insurance. Of the 217 participants who did not support IVF for cancer patients with infertility, 109 (50.2%) did agree with IVF for embryo cryopreservation and 50 (45.9%) of these respondents felt that fertility preservation services should be covered by insurance. The majority of the public agree with the use of IVF for infertility and fertility preservation in cancer patients and supports insurance coverage for these services. 50% of those in this study who disagreed with IVF for infertility were in favor of IVF for fertility preservation, nearly half of whom supported insurance coverage for this purpose." @default.
