- W1990989067 abstract "We describe a pumping mechanism that is capable of inverting a number of rotational lines within the first vibrationally excited state of the bending mode (υ2=1) of H2O under the physical conditions present in the inner layers of circumstellar envelopes around oxygen-rich evolved stars. All the predicted maser lines result from a systematic overpopulation of the “transposed backbone” levels, which have quantum numbers J ka =J,k c , with respect to their neighboring levels. We find that this systematic inversion can be explained by means of differential trapping in the radiative vibrational decays of the levels involved in those maser transitions. Although this mechanism leads to the inversion of the maser lines detected so far, numerical calculations we have performed do not quantitatively agree with the (still scarce) observational data." @default.
