The practical importance of these intense events is their possible role in turbulence through the effects of strong intermittency and how that will direct turbulence modelling. Despite a concerted international effort to simulate these events over a decade ago, their dynamical origin remains largely unknown. A new international collaboration designed to push our understanding of the Euler singularity problem is described. These events are closely related to one of the outstanding mathematical questions of our time: whether solutions of the three-dimensional incompressible Navier–Stokes equations, lying in a bounded domain with finite energy and no external forcing, remain regular for arbitrarily long times (www.claymath.org/Millennium_Prize_Problems)." @default.
