- W1991031609 abstract "A model is developed of collective decision-making by any voting body choosing among multi-attribute or multi-dimensional alternatives. Unlike previous models, the problem of salience (i.e., variations in the importance of different dimensions) is taken account of directly: each individual is assumed to have a lexicographic preference ordering among alternatives—i.e., he ranks the dimensions in order of their importance (or salience) to him, using only the first dimension in this ordering to choose between alternatives, unless they are equally good for him on the first. If this is so, he uses the second, and so on. Some theorems are proved, establishing the existence of equilibrium alternatives under simple majority rule (P is an equilibrium alternative if there exists no other alternative which a simple majority prefers to P), and the plausibility of the lexicographic assumption in various political contexts is discussed." @default.
