- W1991052013 abstract "PURPOSE: To examine the effects of healthy human pregnancy on metabolic, cardiorespiratory, acid-base and temperature responses to a prolonged bout of upright cycling in late gestation. METHODS: The responses of eight healthy, physically active pregnant women (PG. gestational ages 34–38 weeks) were compared to those of four non-pregnant control subjects (CG) with similar characteristics. Subjects in both groups cycled for 40 minutes at a work rate corresponding to 80–85 percent of their measured ventilatory anaerobic threshold. Heart rate and breath-by-breath alveolar gas exchange were measured continuously in the resting state (immediately pre-exercise) and throughout the exercise bout. Arterialized blood samples were also obtained and tympanic temperature was measured at rest, at 10-minute intervals during exercise, and at 10 minutes of recovery for the analysis of acid-base variables. Plasma osmolality was also measured. RESULTS: The PG displayed significantly (P < 0.05) higher values for heart rate under all experimental conditions and for the ventilatory equivalents for oxygen and carbon dioxide during exercise. Values for end-tidal and arterial carbon dioxide tension were lower in the PG vs. CG under all experimental conditions. Arterial pH was also higher and bicarbonate concentration was lower at rest and throughout exercise and recovery in the PG vs. CG. Tympanic temperature rose significantly with exercise in the CG, but not in the PG. Finally, plasma osmolality increased with exercise in both groups and values were significantly lower in the PG vs. CG in the latter stages of exercise and during recovery. CONCLUSION: The results support the hypothesis that healthy, fit pregnant women can safely perform exercise bouts of up to 40 minutes duration at a moderately heavy intensity in late gestation. Further study is recommended to examine maternal glycemic and fetal responses to prolonged exercise. Supported by the Canadian Forces Personnel Support Agency." @default.
