- W1991096874 abstract "Ten different types of microproblematic structures occur on the surfaces, and in epidermal and hypodermal cells of fern pinnules preserved in the Late Pennsylvanian Grand-Croix cherts from France. These include thick-walled spheres, some with a prominent exit site, aggregations of variously sized spheres that may be surrounded by a membrane or sheath, a cylindrical structure composed of polygonal compartments, and branched hyphae/filaments with intercalary swellings protruding from a small opening in the surface (probably a stomatal pore). Some of the structures likely were produced by some fungal group, and may represent (resting) spores, microsclerotia, and conidiophores. The affinities of the others, and sometimes even their biological nature, remain difficult to determine. Nevertheless, documenting these structures is important because it provides the first indication for vascular plant leaves that were colonized by different types of organisms in a late Paleozoic ecosystem. Dix types différents de structures microscopiques problématiques sont présents à la surface et à l’intérieur de cellules épidermiques et hypodermiques de pinnules de fougères conservées dans les cherts du Pennsylvanien terminal de Grand-Croix, France. Elles se présentent soit sous la forme de sphères à paroi épaisse, certaines avec un orifice proéminent, soit d’agrégations de sphères de tailles variées qui peuvent être entourées par une membrane ou gaine, soit comme une structure cylindrique avec des compartiments polygonaux, soit d’hyphes/filaments ramifiés émergeant à la surface à travers un petit orifice (probablement un ostiole), chaque ramification ultime montrant un renflement subterminal. Certaines de ces structures appartenaient vraisemblablement à des champignons et peuvent représenter des spores (dormantes), des microsclérotes et des conidiophores. Les affinités des autres, et parfois même leur nature biologique, restent difficile à déterminer. Néanmoins, il est important de documenter ces structures parce qu’elles fournissent pour la première fois la preuve que les feuilles de plantes vasculaires étaient colonisées par différents types d’organismes dans un écosystème de la fin du Paléozoïque." @default.
