- W1991138891 abstract "This article reviews properties of self-assembled films of insoluble surfactants and surfactant composites and their applications to electrochemical catalysis. These films are supramolecular aggregates resembling stacks of biological membranes, featuring multi-lamellar surfactant bilayers. They can provide stable, fluid, catalytic coatings on carbon electrodes, and have potential applications as sensors, in chemical conversions, and in materials science. In their liquid crystal states, these films exhibit excellent charge and mass transport suitable for catalytic systems. They can also preconcentrate non-polar organic reactants, which may facilitate kinetic control of catalytic reactions. Metal macrocyclic complexes and the protein myoglobin have been introduced into these films as catalysts. Multiply charged ions in aqueous solutions cannot enter such films, providing selectivity in electrolytic applications. Electrochemical catalysis of the reduction of organohalide pollutants by catalytic surfactant films is discussed." @default.
