- W1991291523 abstract "To The Editors: Kawasaki disease (KD) 1 is a disease of infants and is histologically a systemic vasculitis. 2 The cause is unknown, although epidemiologic studies have suggested that some infections can trigger its onset. 3 We have observed that the parents of children with KD are often engaged in medical work. However, no epidemiologic study has yet been conducted concerning the occupations of parents of these children. Thus we conducted a retrospective study based on medical records to determine how many children with KD had parents engaged in medical work. As a control, records for children with anaphylactoid purpura (AP), a form of vasculitis common in children, were similarly examined. The subjects were 315 children with KD (189 boys and 126 girls age between 0.1 and 11.9 years, with a mean age of 2.1 years) examined and treated in 7 hospitals in Yamaguchi Prefecture (including Yamaguchi University Hospital and related hospitals) during a 10-year period from April, 1988, to March, 1998. The occupations of the parents of 96 children (46 boys and 50 girls between 1.7 and 14.7 years old, with a mean age of 6.5 years) with AP examined and treated at the same hospitals during the same period were also examined retrospectively from medical records. Of 315 children with KD 32 (10.2%) had either a father or a mother engaged in medical work such as physicians, nurses, pharmacist and medical technologists. Of 96 children with AP 3 (3.1%) had either a father or a mother engaged in medical work. The proportion of parents engaged in medical work was higher for the children with KD than for those with AP (P = 0.035, Fisher’s exact test). Annually 5000 to 6000 children develop KD in Japan based on the data from the nationwide survey of KD. 4 Numerous suspected agents including bacteria, toxins, superantigens and viruses have been considered to be associated with KD. 3 The incidence of KD in the children of parents engaged in medical work revealed in the present study suggests the possibility that some adults engaged in medical work become carriers of pathogens causing KD.
