- W19913043 abstract "Recent epistemological reflection on natural laws and biological theories raises the question of the status of generality in biological sciences. Local historical studies are proposed to understand why and how generality came to be of prime importance and how generality was built and expressed? Such questions are relevant to the works of French anatomists, Xavier Bichat and Louis Ranvier. Our approach sheds light on the ways generality was valued. In both cases, the concept was at the heart of a new disciplinary approach and represented a means of expressing general observations and object categories. Bichat and Ranvier did not consider a single discipline, but anatomy and physiology . Bichat founded the study of tissues, merging together their anatomical descriptio ns and physiological properties, while Ranvier's microscopic anatomical elements were studied with experimental physiology. In both of these authors, a multiple generality was put forward to build new and supposedly real biological objects." @default.
