- W1991315420 abstract "In connection with the coming revision of the Pharmacopeia, a special interest attaches to the circumstances that led to the preparation of the first Pharmacopeia of the United States of America, and to the life and works of its originator and principal author, Dr. Lyman Spalding, who in January, 1817, at a meeting of the New York County Medical Society took the first decisive action toward uniting the medical societies and colleges of the different states for the purpose of devising a national pharmacopeia. That Dr. Spalding had long had the idea in mind is evinced by the fact that on May 21, 1808, he expressed before the New Hampshire Medical Society a dissatisfaction that there were so many separate pharmacopeias for different states. The regret was uttered in presenting as secretary of the society a copy of the Massachusetts Pharmacopeia which had been sent to him by Dr. John" @default.
