• W1991344258 abstract "A method is outlined of measuring the sum of the absolute concentrations of atoms and ions of an element in the emission volume of the d.c. carbon arc. With this method, the axial and radial distribution of some ten elements in arcs of three different temperatures are investigated. By measuring simultaneously the vapour concentration of an element in the arc and its rate of evaporation from the sample electrode, experimental information is gained about the transport mechanism in the arc. The following results are obtained. (a) The concentrations show a strong radial decrease near the supporting electrode, but in the middle and upper parts of the arc the radial distribution is uniform, at least up to 0.4 cm from the arc axis. (b) The axial distribution of an element is primarily determined by its degree of ionization. A decrease of a factor three between anode and cathode is observed for scarcely ionized elements. A small increase occurs for completely ionized elements. (c) A quantitative expression is established between the vapour concentration n, the average rate of evaporationQ, and the degree of ionization α of an element:nQ(cm−3sec)=130010−α With this result the well-known relation between the sample concentration of an element and the recorded intensity of one of its spectral lines can be extended to comprise both the excitation and the transport phenomena in the arc." @default.
