- W1991570216 abstract "Past studies showed that stereotype-based differences between two social groups are accentuated when observers form their impressions about one group in the presence of the other. Here it was shown that inter-category differences are further accentuated as a function of contrasting group members' proximity to each other while social judgments are made. When pictures of two males and two females were presented in the order of female-female-male-male, a male and a female were judged to be more different from each other on gender-stereotypical, but not on gender-neutral characteristics, if their pictures were at (i.e., the two middle positions), as opposed to farther away from, the category boundary. The results show the moderating role of proximity to spatial boundaries during a social judgment in the accentuation of stereotypical differences between members from different social groups." @default.
