- W1991763125 abstract "A thick volume on Paul and John, on any count the two most creative theological minds in the New Testament, is likely to raise high expectations. Competent comparisons of the two are few and far between, and a reader intrigued by their similarities and differences looks forward to new insights. Alas, such hopes are disappointed at the outset. The editors point out that in the current situation, characterized by an endless flood of publications and ever new methodological reorientations, it is increasingly difficult to be competent in both fields and make real contributions to Pauline and Johannine studies. Jürgen Becker, Professor emeritus at the University of Kiel, is rightly singled out as one of the few persons capable of this feat, and in fact he is the only contributor to the present volume to tackle the issue of the relation of John's circle to ‘Paulinism’. All others only deal either with John or with Paul. The result is an impressive collection of articles on individual topics, which looks very much like a typical Festschrift with the usual strengths (at least some pieces of importance) and weaknesses (no red thread)." @default.
