- W1991782001 abstract "The thermal degradation of polyacrylonitrile has been studied using the techniques of thermogravimetry, differential thermal analysis and thermal volatilization analysis. The influence of experimental conditions on the results is examined. The very sharp exothermic reaction below 300° is an important feature of programmed pyrolysis in an inert atmosphere; it corresponds to the thermal polymerization of nitrile groups. It can be removed completely by isothermal ageing below 200° during which treatment there is negligible weight loss. Oxygen has a marked inhibiting effect on the exothermic reaction; in air pyrolysis, the exotherm occurs at higher temperatures. The development of colour, in relation to the thermoanalytical curves, and the reactions occurring between 250° and 1000° are discussed. @default.
