- W1991981022 abstract "The studies begun in China by the senior author in 1924 and reported in other papers (1926, 1929, 1930) have been continued in California. Conclusions from these studies have indicated that forest-covered soils are more absorptive of rain than soils bared of all vegetation and, further, that the layer of forest-litter is the most important part of a mantle of vegetation in maintaining a soil-profile at its maximum rate of percolation. The principal function of forest-litter was found not to be its capacity for absorption of water, the oft-cited “sponge effect”, but its role in keeping surficial water clear and the prevention of sealing the soil-surface, a condition which maintains soil-profiles at maximum capacities for absorption. Baring of the soil by clearing and cultivation was found in China to be responsible for important increases in rates of surficial runoff and erosion as compared with those from undisturbed surfaces of natural mantles of vegetation. Temple forests which have been preserved since time immemorial made possible remarkable and significant comparisons of the effects of cultivation for agricultural crops with natural undisturbed conditions on surficial runoff and soil-erosion." @default.
