- W1992034111 abstract "To the Editor: The contribution by Loefler1Loefler I Health, science, and religion in contemporary American culture.Mayo Clin Proc. 2003; 78: 893-895Abstract Full Text Full Text PDF PubMed Scopus (5) Google Scholar in the July 2003 issue of Mayo Clinic Proceedings is timely and appropriate. The author emphasizes that religion and the open discussion thereof are becoming potent factors in public life. I was pleased to see that the editorial board of the Proceedings did not shy away from publishing this and other articles discussing the interrelationship of religion, medicine, and health,2Koenig HG Religion, spirituality, and medicine: how are they related and what does it mean?.Mayo Clin Proc. 2001; 76: 1189-1191Abstract Full Text Full Text PDF PubMed Scopus (54) Google Scholar, 3Aviles JM Whelan E Hernke DA et al.Intercessory prayer and cardiovascular disease progression in a coronary care unit population: a randomized controlled trial.Mayo Clin Proc. 2001; 76: 1192-1198Abstract Full Text Full Text PDF PubMed Scopus (106) Google Scholar, 4Mueller PS Plevak DJ Rummans TA Religious involvement, spirituality, and medicine: implications for clinical practice.Mayo Clin Proc. 2001; 76: 1225-1235Abstract Full Text Full Text PDF PubMed Scopus (366) Google Scholar an issue occasionally deemed too sensitive for inclusion in a medical journal. The author reminded me of the seemingly obvious: We who provide health care are obligated to be cognizant of our patients' beliefs. What is less obvious is that it seems prudent for each of us to evaluate our personal spiritual and religious beliefs and attempt to better understand how such beliefs influence our interactions with, and approach to, the patients entrusted to our care. I believe that I share with most of my fellow surgeons an awe of the human body. The beauty and wonder of creation (and of the Creator) is readily evident when we probe the recesses of the human abdomen, chest, neck, and, in particular, the brain. This complex yet highly efficient and durable machine was not put together in a haphazard fashion in a garage on a rainy afternoon. Regardless of our individual religious affiliations and beliefs, the presence and the power of a higher being appear self-evident as we go about correcting the breakdowns that unfortunately occur from time to time in the human body. Personally, I believe that I have been guided by the Creator through every surgical procedure that I have performed. “Miss X” has been a member of our surgical team for almost a quarter of a century. A scrub nurse of the tough old-school type, she is a prime example of excellence in nursing, but as a person, she is much, much more. She is a person of great faith who exemplifies the philosophy that service to your fellow human being is what life is all about and that there is no higher calling than this service. Miss X has chopped firewood for elderly persons in the chill of brutal Minnesota winters, built houses for the poor in Africa with former president Jimmy Carter, dug ditches in the Philippines, and driven elderly and disabled individuals to the grocery store. She has done all this and more, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, year after year. Many years ago, early in our relationship, we were particularly anxious about a difficult operation we were about to perform. As we were scrubbing for the case, I expressed my concern to Miss X and asked her to put in a telepathic call to the “Big Guy” to ask for His guidance. She did, and all went well. This “phone call” has become a rewarding daily ritual. It has caused bewilderment, amusement, and respect among onlookers and visitors on many occasions, particularly when I ask Miss X (who may or may not be participating directly in the surgical procedure) to “Please get on the phone” and she responds (depending on the case complexity or amount of difficulty we are having), “Is this a local call [minor problem] or a long-distance call [major problem]?” We have even, albeit rarely, had to make “intergalactic calls.” The system has served us well. Whether directly or indirectly (the latter resulting from renewed confidence within the surgical team), I believe our patients have been the beneficiaries of these “calls.” I also believe that I have become a better person because of the “calls” and the influence of Miss X. It would not surprise me to learn that this scenario occurs frequently in operating rooms worldwide, utilizing a variety of communication modalities. And that is the way it should be." @default.
