- W1992189924 abstract "Recent research has suggested that recognition memory for verbatim material depends in part on the role played by a given form in the discourse as a whole. Memory for explicit versus anaphoric forms of reference (e.g., nouns versus pronouns) seems to depend upon the marked or contrastive role that a form plays at a given point in discourse. The generality of these effects was tested in two experiments in Italian, using texts that varied along a number of stylistic dimensions. We compared three forms of third‐person reference that are available in Italian: explicit nouns, subject pronouns, and zero anaphora. In an experiment testing memory in context, results suggested that subjects were guessing rather than remembering the forms they saw. A second experiment using reversed versus original versions of all three texts showed evidence for direct retrieval at highlighted points in discourse, for an oral narrative and a fairy tale in which several different characters are introduced, but not in a highly stylized love story, with stylistically marked pronouns. Results are discussed in terms of (a) differences between English and Italian in the relative markedness of pronouns, (b) the effects of stylistic variables on the “memorability” and the “guessability” of forms of reference, and (c) the possible competition between retrieval and reconstructive processes as a function of mode of testing." @default.
