- W199221406 abstract "Baptists, who have traditionally emphasised the authority ofScripture, agree strongly that New Testament teaching andpractice allows them to baptize only believers uponprofession of ~aith. There are, however, many remainingquestions concerning the relation of children to God and theplace of children in the church which are not asstraightforwardly answered in Scripture; here Baptists oftendisplay little consensus.Although the principles of corporate solidarity and ofindividual responsibility operate in both Testaments, thedevelopment of individual responsibility, already apparentwithin later Old Testament history, is carried further in theNew Testament where there is evidence of some breakdown infamily solidarity and of division on the basis of individualallegiance to Jesus. Discussion of the place of the child inthe early church to the fourth century centres aroundquestions of original sin, the 'innocence' of children, therise of infant baptism and the catachumenate. The historicalsurvey also investigates the development of Anabaptist, earlyBaptist and modern Baptist views of childhood from thesixteenth to the twentieth centuries.Baptist perspectives in relation to four current issues inthe theology of the child are considered: original sin andthe 'age of accountability', infant salvation, 'faithdevelopment' and child evangelism. The South Africansituation is analysed by identifying amd interpreting areasof agreement and areas of uncertainty indicated by theresults of a detailed questionnaire distributed amongstBaptists during 1990-1991.Baptists need to recognize that children of believers, although not necessarily saved, are in a creativerelationship with the church, somewhat similar to that of thecatechumenate in the early church. Two particularlyproblematic areas are the question of the appropriate age forbaptism, church membership and communion of children. Thisis partly because although linked with faith rather than with~ pastoral wisdom is needed to assess the evidence fortrue faith in particular cases. In spite of the difficultiesto be faced, Baptist congregations and all Christians andchurches have much to gain from a careful consideration ofthe theological issues related to the place of the child inthe church." @default.
