- W1992257288 abstract "In 1668, Margaret Cavendish introduced her Plays, Never Before Printed with a refrain common in her works: “It is most certain, That those who perform Publick Actions, expose themselves to Publick censures.” She had learned this lesson, not only from the ridicule and incredulity her own works provoked, but also because of her husband's experiences during the Civil War and Restoration. William Newcastle, she writes in her biography of the Duke, “had as great private enemies at Court, as he had publick enemies in the field, who sought as much his ruine and destruction privately, and would cast aspersions upon his loyalty and duty as these did publickly oppose him” (120). In my paper, I will show that the defensiveness that characterized Margaret Cavendish's presentation of her works paralleled the apologia she wrote about her husband. Newcastle had failed as a commander during the war and as an advisor during the exile, when he advocated the disastrous Scottish alliance which almost resulted in the capture of the uncrowned Charles II in 1651. After the Restoration, Newcastle did not play any role at court, which Margaret Cavendish bitterly lamented. He retired from public life and spent the rest of his life restoring his estates. In a sense his role became similar to that of a woman, disenfranchised from participation as a subject or citizen of the state and therefore dishonoured. When the Duchess published her own works, she knew that public actions led to public censures, but nevertheless tried to reclaim honour in the public sphere." @default.
