This contrasts with clinical experience, in which acute hepatitis A rarely takes a serious course. Nevertheless, the general vaccination of all patients with chronic hepatitis C against hepatitis A virus has been strongly advocated (2, 3). We used surveillance data prospectively collected by the Swiss Federal Office of Public Health to reassess the case-fatality rate of acute hepatitis A in patients with chronic hepatitis C.
