- W1992589146 abstract "A new technique for the production of heavy sections has been studied, where the conventional roughing stand is replaced by a forging press. The main result of this replacement is — amongst other things — decreased building area, decreased need for reheating capacity and the possibility of producing heavier beams from continuously-cast blooms. The new method is in some respects comparable with high-reduction processes such as the GFM and the Kocks and Sacks continuous-forging machines. The beam blank, i.e. the semi-product of the roughing stand, is produced by the simultaneous action of four dies; two opposed vertically-working and two opposed horizontally-working. The pair of vertically-operating dies forms the web of the beam blank. The1dies are designed to control the material flow and give a controlled spread and elongation. The main part of the material that is forced aside by the web reduction therefore spreads in a direction transverse to the feeding direction: this material is worked by the horizontally-acting dies to form the flanges of the beam blank. This paper deals mainly with the force requirement, die shape and production capacity of the process, but a simple economic comparison between the forging and rolling techniques is also made." @default.
