- W1992809696 abstract "Abstract Electron Energy Loss Spectroscopy (EELS) was used to investigate the adsorption and reaction of deuterated ethylene on Cu/Ru(0001) surfaces under ultra-high vacuum conditions. The Cu/Ru(0001) surfaces were prepared by depositing Cu on a Ru(0001) surface at 540 K or 1100 K. The adsorption of C 2 D 4 at 130 K on Ru(0001) surfaces with zero or low coverages of Cu results in di-σ adsorption of deuterated ethene. Annealing the surface to 230 K produces adsorbed deuterated ethylidyne (CD 3 C). Higher coverages of Cu results in significant quantities of π-bonded C 2 D 4 . πbonded C 2 D 4 desorbs intact without decomposition when annealing to 230 K. Thus the decomposition of C 2 D 4 is inhibited by the presence of Cu on the Ru surface. The highly dispersed surface Cu is more effective in suppressing surface activity than Cu clusters. The “promoter” action of Cu is discussed in terms of the relative influence of ensemble and ligand effects." @default.
