- W1992816263 abstract "view Abstract Citations (18) References (25) Co-Reads Similar Papers Volume Content Graphics Metrics Export Citation NASA/ADS The Composition and Surface Pressure of the Martian Atmosphere: Results from the 1965 Opposition Owen, Tobias Abstract Observations of the photographic spectrum of Mars obtained at the most recent opposition in March, 1965, are presented and discussed. The absence of any trace of the NO2 absorption at 4480 A confirms previous upper limits set on the abundance of this gas. Observations of the weak CO2 bands at 8689 A and 10488 A lead to a derivation of 65 j 20 m-atm for the abundance of CO2 in the Martian atmosphere. This abundance is used with new observations of the strong CO2 bands at 1.6 made by Kuiper to derive a value for the surface pressure of 9 mb. The uncertainty in this determination ranges from 5 to 20 mb, the lower values being considered most probable. A discussion of these results in the context of the origin and development of the Martian atmosphere suggests that, with the exception of water vapor, the present atmospheric composition may be very similar to that of the primitive, outgassed terrestrial atmosphere.
