- W1993185228 abstract "A negative thermal ionization technique is used to analyse boron traces in metals and alloys by isotope dilution analysis. BO2− ions are formed in a single-filament ion source. The addition of lanthanum nitrate on the rhenium filament increases the ion current by a factor of 103-104. The precision of the 10B/11B ratio measurements is 0.6–0.7% using boric acid, borax or sodium tetrafluoroborate as samples. Various procedures for the isolation of boron from aluminum, aluminum/magnesium alloy, steel and zirconium are described. In all cases, the distillation of the boric acid methylester is used as a selective separation for boron traces after the metal is dissolved in acids. Boron can be analysed at the ppm level with relative standard deviations in the range 0.3–7%, and at the 100 ppb level with relative standard deviations in the range 4–15%. The detection limit of this method is limited by the blank. Therefore, purification procedures for the chemicals used for the sample processing are discussed. The analytical results obtained using isotope dilution mass spectrometry are compared with other methods and demonstrate the value of this technique for precise and accurate boron trace analyses in metallurgy." @default.
