- W1993414997 abstract "Cardiovascular control is not normally considered in terms of its endocrinology. However, recent evidence of the powerful influence exerted by peptide hormones, both peripherally and through the central nervous system, suggests that many of the advances that will be made in our understanding of cardiovascular control could be endocrinological. The peripheral influence of hormones on blood pressure has been known since the discovery of vasopressin (Oliver & Schaefer, 1895), but it is only relatively recently that peptide hormones have been shown to influence the cardiovascular system under conditions which are not pathological. This has followed the realization that the measurement of arterial blood pressure alone is a poor indicator of cardiovascular changes. I wish to concentrate attention on three peptides, vasopressin, atrial natriuretic peptide (ANP) and neuropeptide-Y (NPY), because they seem to form an interesting consortium, both in the periphery and in the central nervous system. There is now clear" @default.
