- W1993437498 abstract "Dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA) and its sulphate ester dehydroepiandrosterone sulphate (DHEAS) were identified in 1965 by E-E. Baulieu as the most abundant steroids in the human body. DHEA(S)11DHEA(S) designates the sum of DHEA and DHEAS is synthesized from another precursor steroid, pregnenolone, and is in turn converted into a number of different steroids including oestrogen and testosterone in both men and women[1]. Most DHEA(S) in the periphery is secreted by the adrenal cortex and to a much lesser extent by the skin[1]. The most probable site of DHEA(S) secretion and metabolism in the brain is glial cells[1]. Brain concentrations are much higher than those found in plasma and are independent of adrenal and gonadal sources[1]. It was speculated that DHEA(S) is intimately involved in the aging process but the lack of clear, clinical relevant effects in humans rendered its physiological significance both enigmatic and controversial." @default.
