METHODS 276 women with IC, including women with IC and another pelvic condition (i.e. overactive bladder, endometriosis, and/or vulvodynia) were recruited from 23 urologic and gynecologic practices with expertise in diagnosis and management of these conditions from across the United States. Subjects completed a telephone interview about their current symptoms and medical history, including self-reported history of FM, CFS, and IBS. All subjects also completed the SF-36 general HRQOL instrument, and the Interstitial Cystitis Symptom Index (ICSI) and Problem Index (ICPI). Data were age- and gender- adjusted and were analyzed via multivariate linear regression analysis. RESULTS Mean patient age was 45.08 (SD 15.88) years, and 83% of the subjects were Caucasian. Prior diagnosis of FM, CFS, and IBS were reported in 20%, 14%, and 46% of subjects, respectively. Mean values for the SF-36 Physical Component Score (PCS) and Mental Component Score (MCS) were 38.66 (SD 14.18) and 44.83 (SD 11.58), respectively. Mean ICSI score was 11.27, and mean ICPI score was 9.89. Results from the multivariable linear regression model (predicting SF-36 scores) are presented in the Table. Analysis for individual subdomains of the SF-36 show similar results. Percent of Patients SF-36 Physical Component Summary (PCS); Standardized Coefficient SF-36 Mental Component Summary (MCS); Standardized Coefficient Patient Type IC only 70.3 Reference Reference IC and other pelvic condition 29.7 -0.73(p=0.641) 2.16(p=0.157) Race White 83.0 Reference Reference Non-white 17.0 1.21(p=0.5120 -0.32(P=0.858) Age (in decades) 2.47(p=0.0001) 0.79(p=0.073) Non-pelvic conditions Fibromyalgia 19.9 -7.23(p=0.000) -1.65(p=0.397) CFS 14.1 -4.22(p=0.064) -4.40(p=0.047) IBS 46.4 -5.29(p=0.000) -1.22(p=0.392) ICSI score (10 point change) -7.97(p=<0.0001) -3.89(p=0.0009) CONCLUSIONS In patients with IC/BPS, the presence of FM, CFS, and IBS has a significant impact on HRQOL, equivalent in impact to the bladder symptoms themselves. These results emphasize the importance of a comprehensive approach to treating patients with IC/BPS and other conditions. © 2012 by American Urological Association Education and Research, Inc.FiguresReferencesRelatedDetails Volume 187Issue 4SApril 2012Page: e334 Advertisement Copyright & Permissions© 2012 by American Urological Association Education and Research, Inc.MetricsAuthor Information Anne M.
