- W1993703838 abstract ",i review of the literature revealed a limited number of investigations of space perception in the congenitally blind. Drever (1955 ) was of the opinion that there is a generalized defect of space perception associated with early blindness. The primary emphasis in the present investigation was directed at the effects evolving in the human organism when visual imagery can be presumed to be lacking. Three different tasks were required of each S. He was asked to manipulate an angular dimension into a flat dimension; to re-orient objects in space; and finally, to orient himself in space. Twelve congenitally blind Ss were chosen from the population of the Michigan School for [he Blind using a 5-point criterion. Each blind S was matched for age, sex, and IQ with a sighted S. There were 9 boys and 3 girls; age ranged .from 12 yr., 1 mo. to 18 yr., 2 mo.; IQs ranged from 91 to 118. Blind Ss were not as efficient in manipulating a curved surface into a flat one nor in orienting objects in space as were sighted Ss. The results for the orientation of himself in space were inconclusive due to two uncontrolled sources of cues. The blind Ss seemed to habitually underestimate space, both small dimensions and large distances. As a group, they did not seem to receive as much useable information from stimuli of the same strength as did sighted Ss. Blind Ss were less sure of their ability to succeed and required more reassurances." @default.
